The community commitment is Louisville, KY's local version of the Consent Decree

consent decree motion louisville stay live

On Wednesday May 21st, 2025 president Donald J. Trump announced that the Department of Justice was pulling out of the lawsuit ending Consent Decree's in both Louisville, KY and in  Minneapolis, MN. On the exact same day, Louisville mayor Craig Greenberg  and police chief Paul Humphrey announced the Louisville Community Commitment, the city's response to what was to be the Consent Decree.

After that, the energy around the process dropped but the cogwheels continued to cycle. What took place soon after were two listening sessions for what the community was looking for in their Independent Monitor. One big issue most found was that you were simply expected to know what that was, what that meant and how it was going to affect your daily life. We will tell you just as the Independent Monitoring team will tell you, this information can be found in the community commitment. Specific to the monitor itself can be found on paragraphs starting at 19. The listening sessions physically consisted of about 30 people with a digital survey released after both. The first survey received 191 responses and the second survey, 192 responses.

Despite those numbers being so close, another thing that we took away was the comparison of that number to the amount of people that are said to live in the city of Louisville which is, at the time of this article, roughly rounding down to 750,000. For those who enjoy math, that is close to 0.0256% of the entire city's population that responded to these surveys. So if you are feeling like you didn't know about this process, we won't be shocked if you aren't the only ones.

Since these survey's the following things have happened...

1. An Independent Monitoring team has been selected, they are called Elefa (ee-lee-fuh)

2. They are making a maximum of $750,000 per year.

3. The Community Safety Commission has also been implemented.

4. There has been one unofficial meeting Wed Dec 10th, 2025 with the community and one official meeting Tues Feb 17th, 2026 as it relates to the community commitment.

5. As of the time of this article, the Implementation Plan has yet to be completed. This can be found at paragraph 14 of the Community Commitment.

6. There is more but we don't want to give away everything for you in this one article.

If you're curious about what all of this means and want to find out more, we invite you to do 2 things.

1. Follow the timeline of events on our livestreams and at the following link which will have more links within it: https://www.kentuckyalliance.org/communitycommitment.html

2. Come to the next Independent Monitor meeting held by Elefa Thursday, April 16th, 2026 5:30pm - 7:30pm inside the South Central Library 7300 Jefferson Blvd. The event formally begins at 6:00pm.

There is a lot happening around us and we are going to try our hardest to keep you up to date. Please educate yourselves as best you can, please get involved because your voice matters but if you do nothing else, #stayLive
